In theory this means that the current Magic Lantern limitations of 5D3 speeds would be gone and in 12 to 24 months we could get 4K Raw out of that baby in Canon quality package. EDIT: Changed the name of the topic. Original was: 5DIV / X - CFast - 4K - less than 12 months - Canonrumors [CR2]
The breakthroughs keep coming. Magic Lantern did the unthinkable and figured out how to get RAW video out of Canon cameras, and now they've managed to increase the native dynamic range of the image without using an HDR method of varying light and dark frames, which can cause serious motion artifacts. That's all in the past for the Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon 7D, as a1ex has managed to get
The install procedure is a little more simple than the GH2 hack. Update to the latest Canon firmware then simply copy the Magic Lantern files to your SD card and go into the menus to select Firmware and proceed with the update. If you take the SD card out the camera returns to the default Canon firmware. Pretty simple really.
The chances of a brick are exceptionally low, and I'd assume if the camera bricked it'd be due to an external causality rather than magic lantern itself, such as installing with a low battery, etc. That being said I use magic lantern for stills, not video, but overall it's a very useful "options pack". It's useful enough that I would say I base
I shot a quick green test that turned in to a quick talk/explanation of 10-12bit. quick facts , Filmed with my 5D2 @ 10bit 2144x1076 23.976p with mlv2.0+audio (11,190 frames) about 8:00 min. Write speed was about 65MB/s , more info at this post here. Edit: I uploaded this video as apple prores4444.
. The 7D Mark II is just short of being my ideal camera. The only 2 things I want that it lacks is a touchscreen for touch AF and a sensor big enough to capture raw video at 1920 width. It's unfortunate that the CF slot is fast enough to record full 1920x1080 raw like the 5D3, but the sensor is just a hair too small to reach 1920.
Re: Canon 7D Mark II. Dual processor cams might be hard nuts to crack. 7D port (Dual Digic 4) was several years late because of this and it's the only ML supported dual processor cam right now. Still missing some features available for other Digic 4 cams, though. And there is no full Digic 6 ML port available right now.
